Greenroots Workshops... Hands on Learning and Friendly Guidance...
all in a Victorian walled garden.

Greenroots Workshops... the Location

The Garden House is within easy reach of Hadlow, Tonbridge and Sevenoaks. The walled garden includes 2 period greenhouses, herbaceous borders, wall-trained fruit and ornamentals, and a wide range of trees and shrubs.

Looking back down the mixed border in August the shrub roses are in their full glory, complemented by sage, rosemary and iris. On the left pinks edge the lawn as you travel to the shade of the apple tree. Old espalier apples line a walk on the opposite side of the garden, where other fruit trees and bushes also grow.

Paeonies are grown together for a sumptuous display in July, seen here with delphiniums, which Gillian exhibits. Beyond, spikes of lupin add contrast in colour and form. On the left rosemary, ceanothus and sage give texture to the mixed border.

In the 1950's the walled 2-acre site was a market garden. Lavender grown here was sent fresh to Fortnum and Masons.
The double row of bushes seen on the right were grown from cuttings taken from the original lavender shrubs.
